How to Play Online Slots

Whether it's the classic fruit machine, or video slots stuffed with bonus features, or millionaire-making progressive jackpots, all you really need to know is how to press the Spin button to have the chance to win some cash. To get started:

1. Find an online casino that's got good reviews, and sign up for an account.
2. Once you're signed in, you can access all the casino's games. Look for "Slots" under the game menu. If you're looking for progressive jackpots, then keep an eye open for "Jackpots". From there you'll see plenty of slot games. Click on the game you're interested in. Often you can try the game for free in "Fun Mode", but if you want to real money, you will have to choose "Play for Real".
3. Once you're in the game's menu, adjust your coin size. So for example, you can set 1 coin to be worth $0.01 or $1. You bet and win in coins. (No worries, when you win, the coins get converted to real money.)
4. Most slots will also let you adjust the number of coins per payline. In the old school slots, there was just one line – you win when you get matching symbols in the center. In online slots, you can have many paylines going up and down the reels.
5. Some slots will let you choose how many lines to bet on. Generally speaking, the more lines you bet on, the higher chances of winning. But just remember, each line will cost you coins!

Once you've adjusted these three settings, you're ready to hit Spin!

Types of Online Slots

In the online casino world, there are basically three broad types of slots, also called "pokies" in Australia and New Zealand.

Classic Slots

Classic slots, or sometimes called fruit machines,  have just three reels, straightforward symbols and game play. They usually lack wilds, bonus games, and free spins.  Often they have just one payline.  Classic slots closely resemble the electromechanical games of a days gone by. Still, they attract a large number of players, whether for reasons of nostalgia, simplicity, or their sometimes high payout percentages.

Video Slots

Video slots usually have five reels and tend to have more complex game play, including features like bonus games, scatters, wilds, multipliers and free spin sequences. They have sophisticated graphics, animations, soundtracks and special effects that sometimes reach "Hollywood" cinematic levels of high definition production values.

Progressive Jackpot Slots

Progressive slots have the added feature that they are part of a network of games that collect a small percentage of bets to create potentially life-changing huge jackpots from tens of thousands to millions of coins.
